Cancelled flight: what the company owes you

In the event of cancellation, the airline must offer you the choice between a full refund of the ticket or an alternative flight to your destination. If the cancellation is announced less than 14 days before departure, and if it is attributable to the carrier, you may be entitled to compensation of up to $1,000.

Immediate care is also mandatory: meals, accommodation and communications, just like in the case of a delay. If the airline cannot offer you a replacement flight within a reasonable period of time (usually 48 hours), they should consider flying you via another airline or give you a full refund.

Useful information

In the event of a dispute, passengers can request mediation with the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA). However, when you are alone in front of an airline, the process can quickly become complex and discouraging. Some companies do not hesitate to delay repayments for several months — sometimes up to 8 months on average!

Claim compensation for a delay

Most airlines often seek to minimize their responsibilities by offering travel credits or invoking exceptional circumstances to avoid paying compensation.

To ensure that you get the compensation you are legally entitled to, without wasting time, money or energy, trust Volannule.com.

Your rights in the event of a flight cancellation in Canada.

A flight cancellation disrupts any trip, whether it is for business, leisure or back home. Fortunately, Canadian regulations strictly regulate the conduct of air carriers to protect passengers and ensure fair compensation in the event of flight cancellations.

  1. Choice: refund or replacement flight.
  2. As soon as flight cancellation, airline must offer two clear choices:
  3. A full refund of the ticket, with all fees included.
  4. A quick replacement flight to your final destination under similar conditions.
  5. The choice is up to the passenger. The company cannot impose a travel credit or a credit note without your consent.

Compensation for cancellation by the company.

Less than 14 days before departure, cancellation by carrier = compensation possible.
The amount varies depending on the company and the severity of the disruption:

  1. $400 for a delay of 3 to 6 hours.
  2. $700 for a delay of 6 to 9 hours.
  3. $1,000 for a delay of more than 9 hours or cancelled flight with no equivalent solution available.

These allowances compensate for the passenger’s inconvenience, loss of time and additional expenses (meals, overnight stays, transport, etc.).

Immediate help required

As with a long delay, the airline must immediately take care of passengers affected by the cancellation.
It must offer you free of charge:

  1. Meals and drinks adapted to the wait.
  2. Means of communication (calls, emails, Wi-Fi);
  3. No accommodation or transport between the hotel and the airport if immediate departure is impossible.

Assistance measures must be taken immediately after the flight is cancelled for the passenger waiting for a new flight.

If no replacement flight.

If a company cannot reroute you within 48 hours of the original departure time, it must:

  1. Book a flight with another carrier to arrive at your destination.
  2. Refund the ticket in full within 30 days of the passenger’s request.

The carrier cannot make you wait indefinitely or leave you without a solution. If the company refuses to cooperate, contact the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), which can impose penalties and order compensation.

Cases of exclusion from compensation.

However, there are exceptions: the company may be exempted from paying compensation in the event of cancellation due to circumstances beyond its control, such as:

  1. Extreme weather conditions;
  2. Security restrictions imposed.
  3. Urgent medical problems.
  4. Force majeure events such as natural disasters or geopolitical events.

Still, the airline must provide basic assistance and reroute you to your destination as soon as possible.
